Edinburgh

Charlotte and I just arrived in Edinburgh.  We had a great last couple of days in Sussex: swimming in the ocean, dinner at the Lobster Pot, shopping and a cream tea in Chichester. Anna cooked pasta for dinner last night, and then Charlotte and I went for a last walk along the prom.  The scene was beautiful but odd: the sea and the sky were the same pale, hazy blue.

This morning we took a cab to the Bognor Regis train station and got the train to London Victoria.  We ate PB and honey sandwiches and apple slices for breakfast on the train.  No tea this a.m.--sigh! I've gotten quite used to Anna's "builders' tea" (Tetley).  It was very comfortable until a huge group of Spanish teenagers boarded.  (Get off my lawn!)

We took the tube to King's Cross to get the train to Edinburgh. The first car was packed, and the doors shut on poor Charlotte. She was unfazed, though; that kid is quite the travel trouper.

The train ride to Edinburgh was great.  (Thanks, John, for the tip about sitting on the right for the sea views.) Charlotte kept herself entertained very well--yay!  I was so excited to be headed north.  The scenery was beautiful. Berwick-upon-Tweed looked especially intriguing; we'll have to explore it next time.

So now we're in our cozy room at the delightful Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel. (Despite it's name, it caters to all types.  I've seen everyone from families with young children to retirees here.)  We're resting while Charlotte watches some CBBC, which she loves (especially Splatalot and Horrible Histories).  We're going to venture out for dinner and a bit of exploring pretty soon.
