Though it didn't lend itself to 3-D as well as The Lion King did (seriously, it's hard to believe that the "Circle of Life" sequence wasn't made with 3-D in mind), Beauty and the Beast was beautiful and fun. My eyes got a little sweaty anytime Belle wore the gold dress and the title song played. But a few things got me thinking:
- What is the deal with Chip and Mrs. Potts? She is elderly, and he is at most six. I'm guessing from the clothes and wagons that the action takes place before the advent of IVF, so how is she his mother? It wouldn't have mattered plot-wise had they made her his grandmother instead, so this one's definitely a head-scratcher. Also, hasn't the Beast been a beast longer than five or six years? So was Chip born a teacup? I am honestly confused.
- In the climactic scene in which Gaston and the townspeople attack the castle and Belle returns, she calls out to him, "Beast!" Am I really supposed to believe that when they play in the snow, when he gives her the library, or when they have their lovely dinner and dance together, she never once asked him his name? If he's getting back in touch with his human side, wouldn't he want her to call him by his name? This doesn't seem to be a Frankenstein's monster or Curley's wife situation, with the lack of a name being some kind of statement about identity. Someone really ought to have named him. I think I'm going to call him Desmond from now on. What? I like that name.
